If you searched for kickboxing classes in Guildford, you're in the right place. K1 kickboxing is a quick, punchy striking style built on punches, kicks and knees, and it's one of the disciplines we coach here at Shin Kick on Woodbridge Meadows, a 10-minute walk from Guildford town centre and the mainline station.

People often wonder whether kickboxing and Muay Thai are the same thing. They're close cousins, and there's a lot of overlap, so don't worry about picking the perfect one before you start. K1 tends to feel a little faster and more explosive, while full Muay Thai adds the clinch and elbows. Both are friendly, both welcome total beginners, and you're welcome to try either to see which suits you.

You don't have to be a fighter to train with us. Most of the room is made up of ordinary people who came for a fun, hard workout and stayed because they enjoyed it. Whatever your age, size or fitness, there's a spot on the mats for you.

What a K1 class is really like

You arrive a few minutes early, get shown where everything is, and meet a coach who knows it's your first time. From there a class usually starts with a warm-up to get you moving, then breaks down a technique or two slowly enough to follow, even if you've never thrown a punch.

Most of the work happens on pads and bags, building simple combinations at your own pace. It's a genuine, technical striking session rather than a treadmill class set to music, but it's also forgiving. You go as hard as you want, and the coaches keep an eye on you the whole way.

Here's the part new people most want to hear: there is no sparring on your first class, and any contact is always optional. You will not be thrown in to get hit. You set the pace, the coaches guide you, and you leave having actually learned something.

Why you'll love it

  • A proper full-body workout that burns energy and clears your head far better than the usual gym routine
  • Real striking technique taught step by step, so you build genuine skill, not just sweat
  • Fast, varied combinations on pads and bags that keep every class interesting
  • Coaches who train regularly in Thailand, so the standard of striking is the real thing
  • All levels and ages train together, from first-timers to experienced strikers sharpening up
  • Gloves and pads provided, changing rooms and showers on site, and parking right outside

This is for you if…

  • You typed kickboxing into Google and want to know it's taught properly here, not buried inside something else
  • You've never trained before and want a welcoming room where being a beginner is completely normal
  • You're after a hard, fun workout with a point to it, rather than another boring session on the machines
  • You like the idea of fast, explosive striking and aren't sure you want the full clinch-and-elbows of Muay Thai yet
  • You already strike and want technical, fast-paced rounds to keep yourself sharp

Common questions

Is K1 the same as Muay Thai?

They're closely related and share a lot of the same punches and kicks. K1 is a faster, more explosive stand-up format, while full Muay Thai adds the clinch and elbows. Both are beginner-friendly, and you're welcome to try either and see which you prefer.

Is this real kickboxing or just a fitness class?

It's proper, technical striking. You'll learn real combinations on pads and bags and build genuine skill, not just follow a workout. That said, it's a brilliant way to get fit, so you get both.

Do I need to be fit or have any experience?

No on both counts. No experience needed and no fitness level required. You'll often be one of several first-timers in the room, and you work at your own pace from day one.

Will I have to spar or get hit on my first class?

No. There's no sparring on your first session, and any contact is always optional. You set the pace and the coaches guide you, so you can turn up without any dread.

What should I wear and bring?

Just comfy clothes, trainers and some water. We lend the gloves, and there are changing rooms and showers on site if you want them.

How much does it cost and how do I start?

Your very first class is free. After that you can pay as you go at £15 per class, or join on a membership. For exactly which classes each membership covers and the latest K1 times, check the timetable and memberships pages or give us a call on 01483 578358.

Where are you and is there parking?

We're at Weyford House, 21/22 Woodbridge Meadows, Guildford, GU1 1BA, about a 10-minute walk from the town centre and mainline station. There's on-site parking right outside.
